Seniors’ Amateur Championship 2017

Seaton Carew Golf Club - 11th & 12th July

Defending champion Stephen East from Wike Ridge Golf Club was one of 132 golfers aged 55 years or over who entered this 36 hole stroke play championship, first played for way back in 1991 at Darlington Golf Club.

In the first round, Windermere Golf Club’s Andrew Atkinson scorched around the Seaton Carew course in a two under par round of 69. Alan Wright from Hessle Golf Club was two off the pace with a level par round of 71 followed by Ian Crowther from Royal Lythan & St. Annes Golf Club and Phil Blackett who both recorded scores of 72.

In close contention after the first round were Chris Mitchelson, Gary Byrne Tim Price and Anthony Holt who all recorded two over par rounds of 73.

Defending champion Stephen East was on 75 so he had it all to do in the second round if he hoped to get his name on the trophy for consecutive years.

In the second round on Wednesday, Andrew Atkinson could not match his excellent sub-par opener and came in with a score of 76 to finish runners-up. Stephen East made a valiant attempt to get his nose in front but his second round of level par 71 was not enough and put him in third place overall.

Chris Mitchelson and Gary Byrne were masters of consistency as they recorded further rounds of 73 to finish fourth and fifth respectively and Trevor Foster improved by nine shots with a great second round score of 69 to put him 6th overall.

With Alan Wright falling away with a second round 78, it was left to Crowther to take the Seniors’ Trophy with a 36 hole total of 141 an excellent performance bearing in mind the CSS of 73 (1st round) and 74 (second round).

As well as the overall NCGU Seniors’ Amateur Championship title, a number of age category winners emerged from this highly successful event.

Timothy Daggett came out on top in the 60 - 64 age group category, Glynn Rees won the 65 - 69 category for the second consecutive year and a highly respectable score of 153 (76 and 77) was recorded by Roy Smethurst as he won the 70 and over age group.
